Local fire departments are warning residents that burning off grass on their property is a risky and unnecessary procedure.
In a joint release by the Ministry of Forests and the Windermere/Fairmont Fire Departments, residents are being advised the traditional spring grass burning is not recommended.
“The potential for disaster out weighs the benefits,” noted Deputy Chief Lee Lax. “Every year municipal and provincial fire fighters respond to numerous emergencies caused by fires set to remove standing grass. These fires often burn out of control due to weather conditions and a lack of appropriate resources to handle the fire.”
Already this year the Windermere Department has responded to one intentionally set fire that quickly got beyond the control of those who had set it.
Lax encouraged residents to consider alternative ways to remove the grass from their properties, including mulching and mowing instead of setting it alight.
“[It’s] a much safer way to remove it. Mulching is also environmentally friendly as no smoke is generated and the mulched material provides organic matter for the soil,” Lax advised.
Burning tips
- Ensure a significant area free of burnable material (a fuel break) encircles your burn area
- Make sure that the fire site is away from buildings, trees, and combustible materials
- Be aware of windy conditions that can spread sparks
- Always make sure you have enough people, water, and hand tools ready to prevent the fire from escaping
- Never leave a fire unattended and make sure it is completely out before leaving the area
