At the February 23, 2010 District of Invermere Council meeting, Council authorized the purchase of outdoor fitness equipment to be installed in Mount Nelson Athletic Park as part of the District of Invermere Active Transportation Network Plan (ATNP).
The ATNP, building on the Community Enhancement Plan (CEP), is focused on pedestrian and biking trail development in the community, linking the schools, Mount Nelson Athletic Park and the downtown core within a very extensive network of trails and walkways, providing healthy options for individuals and families to enjoy our neighborhoods while, at the same time, enhancing their levels of fitness.
Twelve fitness stations will be purchased. In accordance with the DOI’s commitment to make Invermere available to everyone at every level of fitness, some of the equipment will be wheelchair accessible.
Funding will be provided through the Local Motion grant and the District’s Community Works Reserve Fund. The price, including taxes and supervised installation, is $35,442. The installation should be completed by late spring or early summer.
GreenGym ‘playground equipment for adults’ is made in Wengzhou Province, China and imported into Canada by GreenGym.ca Inc. (greengym.ca), a Canadian-owned company based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Through its partnership with GreenGym, ParticipACTION will provide a grant equivalent to 10 percent of the purchase price to the communities that install GreenGym outdoor fitness equipment.
