BP begins drilling near Fernie

Concerned Fernie citizens send a message to the BC government. Following an earlier demonstration in April 2008, Fernie residents demonstrated again in December 2008 against the granting of tenure for the Mist Mountain project, citing environmental and health concerns. Now BP has been granted a permit for test drilling. (YouTube video by Global TV, 2008)
As residents of southern Louisiana prepare to hold a citizens’ summit this weekend on the gulf oil disaster, another environmental confrontation with BP is unfolding in our own back yard.
In 2008, residents of Fernie held protests against the granting of tenure to British Petroleum Canada for its Mist Mountain coal bed methane extraction project. The environmental concerns expressed by residents were apparently ignored, and tenure was granted.
Now environmental concerns expressed by Wildsight and others have again been ignored. A press release earlier this week by Wildsight states that drilling on the project began on June 5. ( http://www.wildsight.ca/news/update-bp-has-already-started-exploratory-drilling-program-rockies )
The Cranbrook Daily Townsman reports that permission for the test drilling was granted just 3 days after the Deepwater Horizon sinking. ( http://www.dailytownsman.com/article/20100617/CRANBROOK0101/306179969/-1/CRANBROOK01/bp-set-to-begin-drilling-in-elk-valley )
The Vancouver Sun reported this week that environmentalists in East Kootenay are dismayed that BP is quietly moving ahead with plans to test drill for a proposed methane gas extraction project in the Elk Valley near Fernie — so quietly that Fernie’s town council was not even aware of it. BP says they have been open about their plans, although they recently closed their office in Fernie. ( http://www.vancouversun.com/business/Embattled+test+well+work+East+Kootenay+project+draws+fire/3163019/story.html )
BP already faces the wrath of the world for the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, and now proposes to develop a methane gas extraction project in the coal beds of southeast BC. The Mist Mountain project is located on Teck Coal land at Fir Creek, 14 km from Sparwood.
The project is situated in an important wildlife corridor at the narrowest part of the Rocky Mountains, between two national parks, and near a proposed UNESCO world heritage site in the neighboring Flathead Valley.
The combination of local and global opposition to both the developer and the potential environmental impact of its activities could draw international attention to East Kootenay.
In a story almost two years ago, the Guardian newspaper in the U.K. reported that another BP project in the neighboring Flathead Valley could result in up to 1500 gas wells covering an area of over 300 square miles. ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/aug/06/fossilfuels.environment )
So it came as no surprise today when I was handed a notice in my local health food store — suggesting that widespread condemnation of BP is already morphing into grassroots action against this project.

Very sad and scary indeed. Let’s get that petition going!
I do believe this is the time we have to stand for life itself and the source that nourishes all life. British Petroleum like all corporations value profit over any healthy future that we will leave to the next generation. Does anybody care? Who will be the first to say no more, you are ruining the waters of the earth? The world is running out of fresh water and we seem to think that all that matters are jobs and the corporate agenda when our children will be dying of thirst.
Yes, we need a petition and a recall campaign and we have to get our First Nations involved and anybody who cares about life on earth. Please let’s do something, these companies are getting away with murder…
Eloise Charet Bear Clan
Eloise,
Did you drive today? Did you put on clothes? Did you shower? Did you eat food that you did not pick in the forrest? Did you ..turn on your radio, type a message on your computer, answer the phone, turn on your furnace, cook, iron, wash your clothes, play at the park, fish, hunt, go on a hike, kayak, take a picture….did you exist? If you did any of the above YOU are responsible for the BP disaster! You are Eloise, as are ALL humans that live on this planet today! You cannot do a single thing without being involved in the use of petroleum products, ergo YOU are responsible for demanding these products and the ongoing search for more and more and more petroleum.
I completely agree with you we are ruining our planet, it is completely and totally unacceptable and it does have to stop or it will stop us all! Blaming those that answer our demand and constantly feed our unwavering necessity for petroleum products is misguided. It makes us feel better when we can hang the mantle of shame on big, bad, ugly corporate Daddy, but Eloise, its not their fault….it’s yours, and mine and everyone else’s. Until we realize that we are the ones committing murder, we’re getting away with it and messages like yours above are iron clad proof that we don’t even realize it (or is it WON’T even realize it)? Unless we stop asking for it and using it EVERY SINGLE DAY, they will never stop providing it to us because they LOVE to profit for something we will never stop devouring!
I disagree. If the banking-energy cartel did not murder everyone who came forward with an alternative energy system we could still do many things without petroleum. People do not have energy choices because those choices have been sabotaged by those who want to monopolize energy in order to control society — for the same reason they control the money supply.
The problem lies mainly with the control-freak elitists and only partly with humans making poor choices because no good choices are allowed.
I also, respectfully disagree with you Shanna. There have been many alternatives that have come along that have not flown. It is easy to slip into this mentality that is was “the man holdin’ us back.” But was it? Do you really think that it was the “bank-energy cartel” conspiracy that wouldn’t allow the electric car to be manufactured? Nope. It was common sense. If you think running cars on petroleum is bad for the environment, where the hell do you think all the electricity was going to come from to fuel our new better than ever idea of switching to electric. Been to a run-of-the-rivers rally lately?? Any idea how many times worse coal fire electrical generation is for Mother Earth than carbon emissions from petroleum based vehicles? Bio-fuel…also an awesome idea!…? I believe the stat for this includes the loss of every square inch of forrest to grow enough biological materials to satisfy our insatiable hunger… that’s long before we consider the fact we are already past our carrying capacity for producing food for a starving planet.
I do believe the petroleum producers would rather that our hunger for their commodity never waivers. I also believe that attitudes like yours and Eloise’s that simply wallow in self pity and corporate hatred do nothing whatsoever to change anything… with all good intention aside, following your path, nothing will EVER change. It certainly won’t change right away, until it does I am still at a loss of why you and like minded thinkers think there is any value at all in hating, wanting to petition against, protesting against and standing in the way of companies that supply us with products that every single one of you use, need and demand on a daily basis.
The point I am trying to make through all this is we need to make a move away from conventional energy sources; petroleum, coal generated electricity, inappropriate hydro etc. The very first step is to pull our heads out of our buts and realize that WE need to make the switch…nobody, especially the oil companies, are going to do it for us. Thinking they would or even should is a little bit idiotic. Thinking they would and believing in some evil empire conspiracy because they don’t is moronic! The BP disaster is YOUR fault Shanna and Eloise! It’s mine too, and everyone else’s. Everyone of us live in a house with a roof… most of them are dark in colour that absorb massive amounts of sunlight and heat. In turn we use massive amounts of energy to reverse the ill-effects of this added heat in our homes… why not put solar panels on every single rooftop?? There are groups out there that are supporting these initiatives and are very active in their promotion of these alternatives… this is our way back! Bitching and corporate hatred don’t do JACK!
Oh Shanna, your conspericy theories are SO entertaining it is a delight to read these fantasies. It truly is a delight. I can get a laugh so often reading these things.
I have never heard so many true to the last drop conspirecy theories run through people’s minds and thoughts other than when I was over in the Nelson area where they, the theories, simply put run, rampant over in that territory.
Keep them up. They are a delight.
My, my, Walter. Did you not know that that ‘conspiracy theory’ trick stopped working a year or more ago? There are just too many people now who know that too much of what has been labelled conspriacy theory has turned out to actually be true.
If you don’t know that the banking cartel is destroying the world financial system (including today’s so-called recession) and if you don’t know that there’s an energy cartel that wages wars for oil, destroys the ozone layer by testing a-bombs, and now is killing the oceans gulf-of-Mexico style … then i guess you haven’t heard that the ship is sinking and you will probably keep on drinking and dancing and go down with the ship. Such is the price of wearing blinders.
Nothing stays still in life. We need to move with the flow, and that includes keeping up to date with what is changing in the world and in the consciousness of humanity. Anyone who resists change these days will go the way of the do-do.
Shanna, Bear Clan and Anonymous,
This is obviously something you all feel very strongly about. Like Walter, I also am a bit amused by your “evil empire” theorizing. I also believe that this is the PERFECT forum for folks to share their opinions… no matter what you believe. I find Anonymous’ call for censorship offensive and fascist. In a re-read of your post I must say I am struggling to find any “constructive contribution” unless you consider calling him a “Troll” anything short of mindless criticism.
More than all of this, I would like to know if any of you have any input whatsoever on a solution to these problems. Bitching about the corporate world doesn’t solve anything, pretending that they are unilaterally responsible for our dependancy on petroleum doesn’t solve anything, calling for an all out war by the first nations doesn’t do anything, cleansing our filthy souls by blaming industry instead of ourselves doesn’t do anything, trying to gag people’s opinions from debates doesn’t do anything, arguing the merits of an imaginary “evil empire” hellbent on the obliteration of the same planet we all live on does not do anything…yet at the end of the day, those so virtuous to assume that they have all answers don’t do anything else??
Yes, we NEED alternative energy! Do something about it. If you think corporate spies are in the wings to stop you, forge on… don’t stop and encourage others to follow you! Don’t dress up and run around with signs like a bunch of flakes… social activism is a hobby … not a solution!
I think CV News should not be allowing comments by obvious trolls like this Walter poster who always seems to put everyone and everything down. I’d like to see this comment area as a place for creative, dignified discussion – and a place to converse that is protected from destructive interruptions by bullies who don’t make any constructive contribution of their own other than mindless rhetorical criticism.
Yes Shanna, as I said, they truly are a delight.
Please give us some more.
Jimmy Hoffa is alive and well and not enclosed in concrete

And Free Willy really has nothing to do with a whale
Or the best one I heard in Nelson was: the CIA was putting a chemical in the fuel of jets over America and the residue of that chemical was posioning the soil in the West Kooteny’s. A tall story, not in the least, I heard it from two different individuals.
And to annon number 37, I’m sorry if so many come up with absolutely non sensical comments that it is so obvious that a comment is so so necessary. If that did not occur; non sensicals, then there would be far less calling to account of those that do make those comments – of the sky is falling the sky is falling.
Oh, Walter. I sure hope you don’t ever decide to run for political office at any level, as our world is already overflowing with politicians who live in too small a mindset and have almost no real idea how the world really works and what is really going on. They buy and spout the PR machine propaganda like everyone else. We don’t need any more sheep in the political flocks.
I don’t think you are a troll, but i do think you may live a rather sheltered and over-trusting life in a small little world of your own that is not representative of the whole.
Dear Anon
I wiould like to suggest that the first and best thing that people can do is become aware of exactly what is really happening to our country and our world. Taking pot-shots at others who have done their homework is childish and does not solve anything. An informed citizenry is what we most need at this point and before we ridicule others, it would be good to be absolutely sure of our facts.
There are definitely things happening behind the scenes and only a cursory glance at the internet will indicate that we should be paying attention. The mainstream media is not telling us the truth, whether we believe they are or not. So we have to look beyond the six o’clock news to see the real picture.
If we do not inform ourselves, we are just pawns in a much bigger game when we rally and protest and allow our governments to enact legislation which is based on fautly information. So this absolutely must be the starting point.
I guess in the end, some will agree to disagree and that is everyone’s right. But the proof will be in the pudding as the saying goes and we are all going to see the truth eventually, either by taking responsibility for ourselves or not. If we choose not to do that, we will, I fear, have a very rude awakening.
No Shanna, I have zero political ambtions, you can rest assured.
My concern is the perpetration of non sensical concepts that perpetuate lies and half truths. That action, the perpetuation, is frightening in its very concept. The touting of conspiricy theories, the telling of half truths which in the end, means half lies is tantamount, for me to undermioning the overall goodness that prevades our society.
One might argue that by calling to account, the CIA or the killers of Jimmy in Chicago, is an adequate methodology for the betterment of society, it does zero for the ability of the society to Nbr 1, believe in the veracity of the teller of tales and Nbr 2. calls into question the source of the teller of tales and subsequently Nbr 3, callls into question the ability of the teller of tales, to simply understand what is important in our individual and little worlds and subsequently comment on the potential for the CIA to poison the soil and water of Nelson and Kaslo.
The net result of the dire world, dire society conspiricy theories that you and others most often espouse, is that you cause the laughter of so many others and the delight of all. When some one, like myself calls you to account for some non sensical commentary, then you quite naturally become defensive and argumentative. That is a very common sociatel trait, neither good nor bad. It just is.
But when that trait becomes the sum effort, then it tells stories about the defensive position itself. I think it was Shakespere that said, and I paraphrase here, I think she doth protest too much.
Hi Lynn,
Thanks for your concern but I, along with most of the population, are fully aware of the way business operates in our country. Your insistent insulting of others intelligence because we don’t spend days on end peeling over dooms day articles on the web is insulting and offensive. In regards to your accusation that I am not “an informed citizen” because I have not taken a “cursory glance” at the nuttiness and out and out garbage perpetuated on the internet….thank you again for your concern, but I am fine in the knowledge that our planet is not operated by evil scientists in secret lairs.
I think it is important to note that there are a great deal of people out there that are taking the alternative energy supply issue and making it reality. There are a number of folks in our community; Greenman Sustainable Solutions and Golden Timber Frames are just 2 that spring to mind. Kickinghorse Coffee, Quinesco Homes, David Thompson Secondary School and many other locals come to mind as organizations who are exploring real alternatives and who are truly making a difference. Oddly, I don’t see them dressing up in ridiculous costumes, marching through town carrying silly signs and making a bunch of noise in distain for the evil corporate world. Why? Because THEY are making a difference in a REAL way. Following your line of thinking, the people that are introducing alternatives and the organizations utilizing these alternatives should be firmly in the crosshairs of the evil empire. Are they? Don’t think so! Why not? You tell me…. On the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) website there is a 65 page directory of companies; all of them offering sustainable alternatives to conventional energy sourcing. Strangely, we are not hearing a rash of unsolved murders or disappearances of the directors of these companies… perhaps “we have to look beyond the six o’clock news to see the real picture.” Maybe they are being knocked off, but in our obvious oblivion and ignorance that you speak of, maybe the rest of the world just thought they were simply being abducted by aliens??? Or… maybe not, perhaps your conspiracy theories are in fact based on nutty conjecture and wild accusation born in the back rooms of schools and meeting halls where the Council of Canadians, the authors of The Tyee or other angry folks meet?? You tell me Lynn… I don’t know. What I do know is we do need to make changes. This is my last post on this ridiculous thread and while you and the rest of the dooms day troop are out there trying to find proof to back up your hair brained conclusions about those evil profitable business people, me and the rest of the level headed gang will be out there trying to make a difference. Good luck though, I truly hope you find some solace in your anger, hatred and bitter jealousy of those who have more than you! Anon…out!
I have so enjoyed the development of this ‘conspiricy” thread and I feel for Anon’s frustration for what is clearly classic ignorance and selective beliefs. Having been an executive and an officer on several major oil and gas companies, I feel qualified to tell you what goes on behind the closed doors of the “Evil Petroleum Producers”.
We do indeed meet regularly to discuss the future of our business and the production curves for our commodity. We talk about supply and demand curves and the uncertianty of price and the impact of the economy. We talk about our staff, their families and the future of petroleum products and the impact this uncertian future will have on all of us. We talk about how we can support a greener future with alternative uses for these products, while taking advantage of new technologies for the product today. We talk about how to use natural gas to fuel cars instead of oil, drastically reducing the emmisions impact. We talk about how we would generate enough electricity to fuel electric cars without further increasing emmisions. We work tirelessly on new technologies to make the use of petroleum more efficient and less harmful to our environment just because it is the right thing to do, and our economy needs it desperately.
We do NOT talk about how we can continue our addictive reliance on oil and how we can further promote that addiction. We do NOT talk about killing people or curbing technology, sabotaging anything, stopping alternative solutions, monopolizing energy or controling society. Those suggestions from Sannon must have have come from reading the National Enquire. How ludicrous!
If we ran out of oil before an alternative is available, it will spell disaster for all of us. We would love nothing better than to find a way for people to have cheap clean efficient energy. Imagine the impact on all of us if gasoline costs $45/liter because of supply issues. We know we need a different solution. As an industry we will invest in those solutions because the transition will be as long as it is inevetibale. But lets not distroy the economy in the process.
There is no conspiricy theory. There are no corporate spies waiting in weeds for you. There are only companies responding to the demands of society. We are all aware that this is a non renewable resource and that there will indeed be alternative solutions. So drop the signs and protests and go get an engineering degree and figure out how to improve battery technology or cold fusion…I may just fund that for you!
What do you mean “run out of oil before there is a viable alternative”? There is enough abiotic oil to last as long as we could ever need it. Peak oil is a lie.
And as for alternatives, why does every inventor who puts together a working ‘free energy’ system suddenly die, huh? Tell me there is no suppression of alternative energy technologies. — This despite some of these technologies being secretly in use by the ‘military’ for decades.
It is all about monopoly. Decentralized technologies that anyone could develop and use without being tied to big brother — these are the ones being suppressed, because ‘they’ feel they need to control us, not let us provide our own energy. — Same as the money supply problem, and pretty much the same people doing it.
Here we go again with the big C’s. I love it.
Shanna, substantiate what you say. Please show some hard facts rather than assertions. By hard facts, not others asserting, but case studies where ” Joe ” was killed on such and such a date and he had proven his assertion that his world saving invention would save us all from the big oil – bank – military – auto conspiricy cartel / monopoly could take over my little part of the world.
Which inventors of the arcane have died before their wonderful inventions could be sold to the world.
Dear critic Walter — I think the onus is on you, the naysayer, to pull your head out of the sand and ask Google for a little help. Everything i have stated is common knowledge among those who bother to keep informed (outside the mainstream media).
The Russians are now leading the world in oil production because for a couple decades they have been deep-drilling for abiotic oil (not the ‘fossil-fuel’ type). Don’t be a critic until you’ve done your homework. It’s not my responsibility to teach you what is readily available. Just google “abiotic oil”, for starters.
Now, as for all those dead inventors of ‘free energy’ devices. That is a little harder to find by Google as it has happened over a long period of time — but it is out there. You just need to be aware that this is a topic somewhat like UFOs, or cell-phones causing cancer — a huge amount of disinformation has been put out to make the original stories really hard to find. But they exist. You need to inform yourself before opening your mouth in criticism.
It is such common knowledge that i even know someone who has a new engine design and who will not talk about it for this very reason.
I know I said above that I wasn’t going to write in again on this thread, but Shanna was so convincing in backing my point that you catastrophists are completely insane, I just had to thank her….your nuts Shanna, but thanks for proving me right! On a completely different note… by different I mean serious; thank you Evil Corporate Executive for writing in on this thread and providing a sane, level headed and reasonable glance at reality.
Remember, just because it was published in the Tyee or on the web doesn’t mean its true… no matter how much you want it to be…
HEY SHANNA, LOOK OUT there’s a man in an Exxon Jacket …made you look!!
Sorry…One more…
Shanna, you should really do a bit more reading on your abiotic oil theory. The premiss that this is, in fact, how oil is produced seems to have been abandoned years ago, those that still support this theory admit that it really does not speed up the oil production process anyways, ergo, we will run out of oil even if it is not produced as we have previously thought. Peak oil stands… oil emissions still pollute, we still need to search for solutions/alternatives, most people support this… except for those with costumes and signs. Oil producers are still out there answering the demand while simultaneously searching for alternatives. You’re all to far too busy searching for someone o blame.
I was sure Shanna would suggest all oil is abiotic and therefore limitless. For those of you not familiar with this generally unaccepted theory. Abiotic oil is suggested to come from deep within the the earths crust and directly from magma. Most scientists believe oil is biogenic in origin and created through thermogenic or biogenic processes on carbon rich source rocks. All oil contains evidence of microbial activity and we can duplicate microbial biodegredation in the lab. The process by which microbes degrade hydrocarbons into simpler molecules like natural gas, is not refuted. The oil sands are the end result of a degredation process where oil was exposed to the surface and degraded to tar. Youll notice the same thing happens to the oil in Gulf of Mexico. microbes degrade the light oil very quickly into “tar balls”.
A big problem with the abiotic theory is magma contains very little free carbon and certianly not enough to create the vast resources we have. Geologic evidence like pinacle reefs full of oil, encased in inpervious shale, make the abiotic mechanism very difficult to support. How would the oil get into the reefs?
“Free Energy” means a whole bunch of different things although its never free. I’m sure Shanna, you remember the “First law of thermodynamics” that “Energy can neither be created or distroyed” only changed. So one can not “create” free energy. If you are refering to wind or solar energy as free then I think everyone would argue against you that there is tremendous research in these fields and no suppression. Or are you are refering to some kind of perpetual motion machine that utilizes quantum mechanics to say capture energy from cracked hydrogen molecules as being the free energy that is being suppressed? Research costs into “legitimate” systems like that costs billions! (so much for the free part huh!)
The internet is full of millions of websites offering their latest version of magnetic generator or Tesla Free energy. It doesnt look suppressed to me at all. maybe you should invest your money into one of them.
I can assure you I have no desire to control you or anyone in your quest for alternative energy sources. I do believe oil is a non renewable resource and has to be replaced as a fuel. There are many other applications we can use hydrocarbons for that dont include burning them.
I’m Sorry Shanna, I think you are mislead
Dear Evil Corporate Executive — just a brief response to your anti-reality rant.
Firstly, abiotic oil is not a theory. The Russians have been pumping it for years. Prove me wrong.
Secondly, all ‘laws’ of physics are still just theories. There are always exceptions to theories, and so-called ‘free energy’ is one of them — though some understand why it works. Free energy / anti-gravity is also not a theory. Have you looked into the B-2 bomber’s electrogravitic design?
Afternoon Shanna
Just got on the net and read your missives from the 16 through to today the 19th.
In response:
In other words Shanna, you have zero definitive examples of supposed inventors coming up with save the world inventions that have been bumped off by the cartels and co conspiritors that are out to rule the world.
Just as I and so many others have thought. Smoke and mirrors, assertions and scare tactics.
And NO Shanna, it is not for me or others to prove you right or wrong in your assertions. It is for YOU to prove you are correct in your assertions of the evil conspiricies out there. It’s just that they really don’t exist as you are telling us in all of your above comments.
But I still find your conspiricy threories wonderfully entertaining in their farce content.
Shanna, you have clearly passed out of the realm of scientific investigation and into politics to support your conspiracy theory. The reality challenge, young lady, is yours not mine. I have studied geology, physics, thermogenic maturation, oil and gas for many decades and found enough oil and gas personally to supply most of southern BC for decades. Abiotic oil IS a theory at best and probably better qualifies as a hypothesis. Its been around for for 50 years and has never gained much acceptence within our scientific community. ( I know thats becasue its all a conspiracy. right)That means the onus is on YOU to prove it as fact. To prove a scientific hypothesis you are obligated to DISprove alternatives explanations. Thermogenic generation has been proven decades ago and is easily repeatable in the labratory. If you were of a scientific back ground (as I am) you would know that. I have degrees in both geology and geophysics and 25 years of oil and gas exploration. Tell me how you are even qualified to have this conversation.
The First Law of Thermodynamics is only a theory? OMG, when did that happen?? The first law has been considered “The Law of Nature” since J.P. Joules experiments in the 1840′s quantified the consevation of energy!! Surely you remeber studying that!!! This is a disaster! Shanna you must share with us when this all happened. the text books will need to be rewritten !
I am not real familiar with antigravity designs utilized from extraterrestrial technologies, I assume that is what you are refering too in the B-2 bombers. It fits right up there with the boogey man and the tooth fairy. You are entitled to believe what every you wish but you might want to wear an aluminum hat when you surf those site, I hear they can penetrate your brain from the computer screen…. Hmmm.. me thinks they already have!!!
To Evil Corporate Executive … no where did i say that conventional oil deposits are not a reality, only that there is another kind of oil (abiotic) that is found much deeper and in much larger quantities — such as what is spewing, unfortunately, into the Gulf of Mexico from 35,000 feet down. I’m a little surprised that someone with geological expertise does not know this.
And nowhere did i say that the so-called ‘laws’ of science are not good working hypotheses — good enough to base today’s technololgy on. But all of science, all of our explanations of reality, remain hypothetical — as evidenced by the many changes of theories over the years as new aspects of reality are discovered. For instance: quantum physics, which itself is now becoming outdated in light of new information. All of our understanding is constantly changing and it is all just theories, some longer lasting than others.
Just remember — the fact that you are not aware of something is not evidence that is does not or cannot exist. It is hard to prove a negative.
This is my last comment on this thread. It is futile to try and educate the uneducatable. Shanna the oil from the Gulf of Mexico is NOT abiotic. Please please! try and read credible sources. These are Cretaceous and Jurassic sediments…SEDIMENTS! There are hundreds of core and samples with thermogentic maturation lines clearly putting these rocks in the oil and gas generating window. The oil is generagted through thermogenic processes..period..NOT abiotic…The oil is in sediment regardless of the depth. There is sediment at over 50,000 feet in some parts of the GOM. Dr Alexandra Novak offers this simplistic explanation. Dr Novak is a volcanologist and has forgotten more geology than you have ever learned. You will notice no references to abiotic processes
“Like all hydrocarbon deposits, the source of the hydrocarbon deposits in the Gulf of Mexico is the repeated burial of organic material within a layered sedimentary basin. As the sea-level changed repeatedly in the region during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, organic material was buried by sand, silt and limestone. During times of low sea-levels, also known as regression, plant and animal life thrived on the surface. During times of high sea-levels, also known as transgression, this life was buried under sediment. This happened numerous times over millions of years, leading to multiple pockets of oil and natural gas within the basin.
Scientists have identified 11 transgression-regression cycles during which the sea-level changed by several hundred meters. Based on the kinds of rock formations the hydrocarbon reserves are found in, scientists can assume what kind of organic material was buried. In other words, scientists can determine if the organic material came from terrestrial life (plants) or marine life (dead sea creatures at the bottom of the ocean)
During times of transgression, sediment is finer grained as the sea-level is higher. So there will be hydrocarbon deposits located within shale and limestone formations. During times of regression, sediment is coarser as the sea-level is lower and the waves are depositing sand along the shores. So there will be hydrocarbon deposits located within sandstone formations.

Bye bye Evil Corporate Executive. My whole point was that peak oil is a lie. Look at how many major oil deposits have been found in the past few years. Even setting aside abiotic sources (which you dispute), peak oil is still a joke.
Good point Shanna! There have been some major discoveries oil deposits all over the world. Most notable are those found very deep under the ocean floor. Peak oil must be a lie especially when they have to drill several Kms below the surface of the ocean to access deposits that don’t bubble up in farmer’s fields. After all there’s no major difference between drilling at the bottom of the ocean or in Leduc, Alberta… unless there’s a little leak or something? But hey, it’s not like we’re fishermen or ducks or anything!
So, once again Shanna, please tell us why they set up massive drilling platforms in very uninhabitable areas and risk major catastrophes at the bottom of the ocean instead of just going to the magical abiotic oil tap… oh yeah, because they’re EVIL!!
Why do you have such a difficult time believing that most people are generally good (or not evil) and that even folks that earn a good living care about the state of the planet, yet you fall for so many lines of BS hook, line and sinker…? I’ll never get folks like you, but hey…to each their own. Thank God for folks like Wally and Dr. Evil to contrast with the voice of reason.
Too bad Shanna, it looks like you stepped into the big pile of brown stuff on the ground and cannot get the odour of ignorance and fear mongering off your shoes.
