Local fire departments are warning residents that burning off grass on their property is a risky and unnecessary procedure.
In a joint release by the Ministry of Forests and the Windermere/Fairmont Fire Departments, residents are being advised the traditional spring grass burning is not recommended.
“The potential for disaster out weighs the benefits,” noted Deputy Chief Lee Lax. “Every year municipal and provincial fire fighters respond to numerous emergencies caused by fires set to remove standing grass. These fires often burn out of control due to weather conditions and a lack of appropriate resources to handle the fire.” [Read more]
Windermere house fire
Fairmont Street recreational home in Windermere was heavily damaged by fire.
The Windermere fire department responded yesterday (Saturday) to a major house fire on Fairmont Street in Windermere.
According to Windermere Fire Chief Jim Miller, the fire was reported by a neighbor and firefighters were there in approximately 4 to 5 minutes. On arrival, about a third of the building was on fire.
Damage was confined to the top floor of the 2-storey building, but water damage was heavy throughout. Chief Miller said it is likely the building will have to be torn down to the foundation, or at least the second storey will have to be completely rebuilt. [Read more]
Rescue truck donations needed

The Invermere Fire Department is raising funds for a new rescue truck for the District of Invermere. Equipment for road rescue and extrication is not provided by any government agency so funds need to be raised locally.

To assist with this endeavor the Artym Gallery has printed 10,000 flyers that explain why they need this truck, what they will be purchasing, why they need donations, and how and where to make donations. A representative from the Artym Gallery attended the Invermere Business Committee meeting on January 20 to ask businesses to promote this opportunity. [Read more]
