Local fire departments are warning residents that burning off grass on their property is a risky and unnecessary procedure.
In a joint release by the Ministry of Forests and the Windermere/Fairmont Fire Departments, residents are being advised the traditional spring grass burning is not recommended.
“The potential for disaster out weighs the benefits,” noted Deputy Chief Lee Lax. “Every year municipal and provincial fire fighters respond to numerous emergencies caused by fires set to remove standing grass. These fires often burn out of control due to weather conditions and a lack of appropriate resources to handle the fire.” [Read more]
