Jumbo faultline.
It’s been a challenge to address all the Jumbo issues that came up in my absence over the last month. I belatedly respond.
Meredith and like-minded thinkers: No need to get angry over JCAB’s name. JCAB is what its mission statement reads: a group of locals on a mission to support an environmentally sound JGR — so all people can access powder and a glacier resort. I personally invite you to read JCAB’s beliefs, and help build a sustainable economy in this region based on environmental respect. I would appreciate substantive feedback about JCAB’s core beliefs. Larsen’s attacks on Glacier Resorts Ltd. include one telling phrase; “since the area is larger and no longer held by a non-profit organization” Apparently profits are so evil that any means can be used to discredit those involved in their pursuit. There are three great fictions that Quinn and Larsen are trying to perpetrate on the unknowing public about Glacier’s involvement at Farnham and they continue to beat the same drum no matter what evidence against their false claims is presented by the parties involved who actually know what the truth is. Wildsight questions Jumbo land tenure

Glacier Resorts travesty leaves taxpayers on the hook — who knew? Public investigation bears strange fruit as silt, gravel, sewage and gas spills into Farnham Creek.
A year and a half ago, Glacier Resorts Ltd. started punching a road through the alpine to access what public groups are calling a “dubious tenure” to parts of the Farnham Glacier, located 67 kilometres into the Invermere backcountry.
The action has left the area with considerable environmental damage. Members of the public have noted several infractions in the contested area—each caused by actions taken by Glacier Resorts and/or its contractors. [Read more]

Jumbo

In 1991 BC had a new NDP Government, and an existing process (CASP) for proposed resorts to receive approval. The Jumbo proponent began this process – then the NDP Government created CORE – a Commission to decide on local land uses – by locals.
The proponent was not obligated to enter CORE. They participated in good faith, as the NDP stated that CORE would help JGR; a favourable result meant there was local support & provide a decision on land use – an unfavourable one would kill it. [Read more]
Jumbo Glacier Resort: A necessity for southeast BC

The Sept. 17 Sun article on Jumbo Glacier Resort (Citizens battle to be heard at local town halls) was stunning in its bias, unfairness, and irresponsibility. How is it that a renowned author of this article be completely misled by the propaganda of the opponents, and dismiss the greatest opportunity for economic sustainability that southeast British Columbia has ever been given?
To say that JGR is “wildly unpopular” is untrue. The only thing “wild” is the True Believer-hood of JGR opponents whose policy of intimidation has been repeatedly protested by the general population. [Read more]

Excerpts and audio from RDEK board meeting, September 4, 2009.
Friday’s meeting of the RDEK saw two of our rather colorful locals once again “at it” about Jumbo, particularly about the results of the August 7th meeting where it was decided to recommend to the Provincial government they make Jumbo a resort municipality. [Read more]
Jumbo Liberal budget

The Liberals recently unveiled the new provincial budget, it goes without saying that it fell short of our collective expectations. The NDP, never to miss an opportunity, have lobbed insults, made accusations and done everything in their power to accuse the Liberal party of full responsibility for our short comings. Why not, it’s normal political practice to lace up and kick the crud out of the party in power during a recession; FYI we are in the midst of arguably the largest GLOBAL recession in history. Is this the Liberals fault? Norm MacDonald would make you think it is! Are the NDP doing ANYTHING to drive solutions to navigate our provincial interests through these extremely difficult times? Of course not, they are far more concerned with tossing darts for their own personal and political gain than to actually do their job and attend to the insignificant matter of running our province. Suppressing the voice of the people

On August 7th the British Columbia government in concert with eight Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) directors and a Vancouver real estate promoter launched an attack on democratic process and local autonomy. It was an attack from which the region and the province may never recover.
The attack was in the form of a motion put forth at a RDEK directors meeting by Mayor David Wilks of Sparwood. It states that the regional district should walk away from its authority and responsibility to settle the Jumbo zoning issue by sending it to the provincial government for resolution. [Read more]
Jumbo : 'RDEK has now democratically agreed'

Extremists like John Bergenske and Wildsight continue to debate Jumbo and try to distort history for their political ends. This is because Jumbo is largely settled: JGR was found to be in the public’s interest and environmentally acceptable through a nine year review process. The RDEK has now democratically agreed.
Opponents claim a poll paid for by WildSight shows most people against Jumbo Resort. If the proponent submitted a poll he paid for what credence would you and the other opponents give it? None and we all know it…the most recent EAO call for submissions found almost as many submissions for as against. [Read more]
