Facing the loss of their civic rights and the postponement of elections scheduled for January 17th on the grounds that there is a pandemic emergency, members of the Ukrainian movement FEMEN have mounted a drastic protest in the form of a fashion show with underwear made from surgical masks.
The protest took place in Independence Square in Kiev on November 9. Under draconian martial laws introduced by Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, demonstrations have been banned.

Statement on the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
The Council of Canadians, one of Canada’s largest public advocacy organizations, with members and chapters across the country, views positively the Olympic goal of friendly international competition between athletes who excel in their respective sports. We understand and appreciate the pleasure and enjoyment so many around the world share in the spectacle and achievements of the Olympic Games.
However, we are gravely concerned by the increasing evidence that these worthy aspects are being overwhelmed, if not totally supplanted, by an “Olympic industry” focused on real estate development and massive corporate marketing opportunities. An “Olympic industry” founded and based in undemocratic and unaccountable national and international structures, implicated in numerous corruption scandals that undermine everything a truly noble Olympic movement should stand for. They gathered with signs, adorned themselves with costumes and marched loudly through downtown Invermere chanting phrases like “No dam way!” and “Axor go away!” It was a visible and very vocal message from a community whose once-apathetic nature is clearly being shed.
The cause of yesterday’s (June 25) public display of displeasure is a proposed independent power project slated for construction on the west side of the Purcell Mountains. [Read more]

As Columbia Valley residents begin to amass in opposition to another significant development proposed in the Purcell Mountains, one would be forgiven for feeling a sense of deja vu.
While a proposed run of the river hydroelectric project has nothing, directly, to do with a controversial resort development proposed in the Jumbo Valley, many of the same concerns are being voiced. [Read more]

It is reasonable to presume that West Nile virus is native to North America. Most birds are immune to it. One unanswered question is whether birds like this crow are dying from West Nile or from the effects of pesticides used to prevent West Nile? (Photo: Izvora - from Wikimedia Commons)
A plan by Interior Health to prevent the spread of West Nile virus in the southern interior and Kootenays appears to be moving ahead, despite public objections.
The BC Ombudsman’s office is currently investigated a complaint that the public consultation process was inadequate.
West Kootenay residents rang the alarm over this plan when they had concerns about it and could not find an avenue for registering those concerns. [Read more]

People worried about the dangers of wireless Internet now have a new concern. Reports are surfacing that some Internet service providers in the United States will be discontinuing dial-up access, creating a dilemma for those who have continued to use a wired connection in order to avoid exposure to wireless.
Numerous people report feeling unwell around wi-fi and wireless networks. Others are just wary because, as with cell phones, they have heard that wireless is thought by some to be unsafe. [Read more]

The Interior Health Authority has filed a draft 6-year plan to spray the Kootenays and Southern Interior for mosquitos that can potentially carry West Nile virus. Although no cases of WNv originating in BC have been reported, IHA says it will spray periodically from early spring until fall each of the next 6 years because it is sure the virus is coming.
